Ensuring Emergency Care for All Children: The National Pediatric Readiness Project

Presentation Date: 05/16/2023
CE Expiration Date: 05/16/2026

RETURN TO: Webinars

DURATION: 57:51

Pediatric patients are a challenging population amongst the trauma patients and they have their own uniqueness. One of the challenges is confirming that the team is ready to provide care for the pediatric population. The Pediatric Readiness project was developed to assist centers in their preparation for the pediatric population due to many centers not being prepared based on the study.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of Pediatric Readiness in emergency care for children
  • Describe the National Pediatric Readiness Project
  • Identify Pediatric Readiness Assessment results and available toolkits
  • Recognize local and national Pediatric Facility Recognition programs

The presenters provided the following answers to questions asked during the presentation:

  • Can a facility take the NPRP anytime and receive a gap report?
    1. We are currently in the quality improvement (QI) phase of the NPRP assessment. This means that hospitals can visit www.pedsready.org and take the assessment as many times as they like for QI purposes. Participants immediately receive an email gap report summary showing their overall pediatric readiness score, the answers to the scored questions, and a summary of all of their answers to all of the questions. This report looks different from than gap reports received during the formal 2021 NPRP data collection period, and it does not do comparison scoring from previous years. It is still considered a ‘gap report’ and is accepted for ACS Trauma Center verification where applicable.
  • Is there a contact, aside from the EMSC Program Manager, that would be able to provide their state's EDC liaison for information regarding if a facility completed the NPRP and access to their gap report?
    1. Yes! Folks are welcome to reach out to our PedsReady Support Team at any time with questions related to the NPRP assessment, gap report requests, NPRP resources, research inquiries, and more at PedsReady@hsc.utah.edu. We usually get back to folks within a 24-hour period and are happy to be of assistance. Note: We always work with the respondent to provide gap report information directly to them as per confidentiality protocol. In other cases, we refer folks back to the EMSC Program Manager for that state depending on the nature of the request. We never give a 3rd party PII, data, or other information about a facility unless they are a researcher who has filled out a formal Manuscript Analysis Request Form (MARF) with the EDC.
  • When is the next NPRP?
    1. There has been no formal announcement, but the next NPRP assessment is slated for 2026 as part of a 5-year cycle.
