This webinar will present a case study of an OB trauma patient. The case will discuss prehospital SMART triage and the prehospital and hospital care of the patient, but most importantly, it will provide an overview of the performance improvement patient safety program for this patient. The PIPS process will be discussed along with the interaction of the OR and OB/NICU team in the care of this patient. The presentation will discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to a trauma OB case. Lessons learned both in the trauma arena as well as in the maternal/NICU area will be outlined.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the Start Triage System
  • Describe the treatment for an obstetrical emergent C section patient.
  • Discuss symptoms and treatment for a placental abruption
  • Evaluate an obstetrical trauma case utilizing the performance improvement patient safety process
  • Discuss procedures that can be adopted in a trauma program for a coding obstetrical patient

Kathy Rodgers, MSN, RN, CNS, TCRN, CEN, CCRN is the Director of Trauma at CHRISTUS St Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, TX in a large Level 3 trauma center that admits 1600 patients per year. She has been the director of the trauma center since its inception in 1995. She is also the state President of the Texas Trauma Coordinators Forum. She is very active at the local, regional and state level, and is on the State Trauma subcommittee of GETAC. She is on committees and taskforces for the Texas Department of State Health Services. She is Vice Chair of the local RAC as well as chair of the hospital committee of the RAC. She has spoken at the local, regional, state and national level.

Kelli Huebel, RN is the Neonatal Program Coordinator for the only Level 3 Neonatal ICU in Beaumont, TX. She has been caring for babies since becoming a nurse in 2005. She developed the Neonatal Transport Service for her unit. Kelli has been involved in local and state committees for Neonatal care in Texas, and is the Chair for the Perinatal Committee of the local Regional Advisory Council. She was in the first ever group of nurses to receive a NCC certification in Obstetrics and Neonatal Quality and Safety. Kelli is a STABLE instructor. She is a proud wife and mother to two beautiful daughters.
