Since 2021 have been the Trauma, Emergency & Transplant Manager for Lenmed Healthcare Group–SA & Africa. ENA liaison for TNCC in Africa. Serves on STN International Council and Global Trauma QI Task Force. Current President of EN Soc. of SA, board member of EM Society of SA and Fellow of Academy of Nurses of SA.

Michelle is a seasoned acute care nurse practitioner with over two decades of experience, distinguished as one of the pioneering nurse practitioners trialed by the trauma center to tackle the challenges posed by the 80-hour resident work week. Throughout her career, she has been instrumental in shaping the role of nurse practitioners at her center, emphasizing the delivery of exceptional patient care as a top priority.

Currently serving as a Senior Clinical Program Manager and Process Improvement Specialist at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland, Michelle brings a wealth of expertise in clinical practice and process optimization to her role, ensuring the highest standards of care for trauma patients.

Eric has responded to emergencies and disasters of all different types and sizes to include a terrorist attack, 7 hurricanes, tropical systems, a special communicable disease, pandemic, a shooting in a hospital, severe weather, wildfires, multi-type vehicle accidents, mass casualty incidents, hazmat incidents, threats, etc. He is currently the Assistant Vice President, Emergency Management for Orlando Health, Inc. healthcare system in Central Florida.

I am an active member in several professional trauma organizations. I teach at APU & UCLA in the School of Nursing. I have spoken at the national conferences.

Dr. Maureen Bell was born in Jamaica, West Indies. After completing high school there, she migrated to the US. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Prairie View A&M University where she graduated Magna cum laude. Dr Bell received her medical degree from New York University and completed her postgraduate training at the Jacobi/Montefiore Emergency Residency program. Dr Bell served as the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Howard University Hospital and the Chair of Emergency Medicine at the Howard University College of Medicine from 2016-2023. Dr Bell is the 2020 recipient of the Wes Curry award in Executive Leadership awarded by the American College of Emergency Medicine. Dr Bell is one of the founding board members of the Vituity Cares Foundation, with the mission of eliminating healthcare inequity and increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in healthcare. Dr Bell became the Vituity Physician Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Health Equity in April 2022.

Vicki is currently the Executive Director, Trauma Services for Banner Health. As a trauma program leader for over 25 years, she assumed an executive leadership role for the system trauma service line in 2016. She completed both her undergraduate nursing degree and her master’s degree at the University of Alabama. Vicki is active at the local, state, and national levels and is a long-standing member of STN. In addition, she is an ACS trauma center site reviewer and a state trauma surveyor.

Andrew Bernard is from Kentucky. His mother was a nurse anesthetist. He worked as an EMT in a rural county before becoming a helicopter dispatcher and was inspired to trauma care by UK Aeromedical’s flight nurses and paramedics. He was educated entirely at the University of Kentucky. He’s currently Professor Of Surgery, the Paul A Kearney MD Endowed Chair in Trauma Surgery and Chief of the Division of Acute Care Surgery in the UK College of Medicine. And serves as the Trauma Medical Director at UK Healthcare’s level I adult trauma center.

Dr. Bernard served as president of EAST in 2018 and considers collaborations with STN to be some of the most enjoyable experiences of his EAST presidency. He’s a reviewer for the ACS VRC, and says the reviews in which he works alongside a nurse reviewer, are by far the most educational, because the nurse reviewers always ask the hardest questions.

Dr. Bernard loves teaching and believes strongly in the legacy established by taking time to educate. He says, “You’ll never know the lives you save by teaching others how to save a life”. Raised by nurses his entire life-whether at home or at work-he’s also a vocal nurse advocate.

She has held many positions throughout her tenure at CoxHealth- from staff and charge nurse in the NTICU to Flight Nurse for Emergency Services to Trauma Nurse Clinician and Injury Prevention Coordinator. Currently, she shines in her long-term role as Administrative Director of Hospital Service Line. Jami's commitment to trauma nursing education is also evidenced by her involvement and leadership on numerous related committees.

For the past 20 years she has been the Trauma CNS at Temple Univ. Hospital in Philadelphia. Has published and lectured nationally and internationally on a multitude of nursing topics. Has worked on several STN committees including geriatrics and the annual conference. Has served on the Society of Trauma Nurses Board of Directors and is a Past President.

Prior to joining the PTSF, Kristen served as the Lead Performance Improvement Coordinator for Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, and worked in the trauma surgical ICU. Additionally, Kristen has published on the topic of PI.

He is a Trauma Designation Reviewer in Colorado and Nebraska and currently is the nurse representative on the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program Training Project Team.

Personally, Krista enjoys chasing after her 2 active boys with her husband.

Previously she worked in the trauma surgical ICU. Keriann is a member of Pennsylvania Performance Improvement and Patient Safety committee and the PA Trauma Nurse Advisory Council. Keriann has presented her work nationally at the STN and TQIP conferences.

Jennifer Heidle is the Clinical Research Coordinator for Trauma Services at Cox Health Systems in Springfield, Missouri. She received a bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University with specialties in Biomedical Science, Biology, and Education, and will graduate from Cox College of Nursing with her BSN in May 2024. She spent several years in higher education, as a member of the MSU adjunct faculty for the Biomedical Sciences Department, teaching Introduction to Biomedical Sciences and Human Genetics prior to her role in Trauma services. She is a trauma education and moulage enthusiast who enjoys spending time with her six children.

Her focus is on the business processes and procedures related to VRC site visits. Sarah holds a master’s degree in public administration and project management professional certification.

Heidi Hotz is an executive trauma nurse leader overseeing the Level 1 trauma program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She has served in the elected position of President in 4 trauma professional organizations: STN, ATS, Trauma Managers Association of California, and the LA Assoc. of Trauma Program Managers. She is the recipient of the STN's Trauma Leadership Award. She was awarded the EAST Honorary Membership, being the second nurse to receive this honor.

He works in Nashville, TN where he is the Division Trauma Medical Director for the TriStar division of HCA and the facility Trauma Medical Director for TriStar Skyline Medical Center.

Katherine Joseph is the National TSN Coordinator for the ATS. Her focus is to support TSN coordinators as they implement and strengthen the TSN at their local trauma centers. Prior to joining the ATS, Katherine was a TSN coordinator at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD. There, she also served as a lead clinical research specialist for the Department of Orthopaedics.

She is an ATLS & an Emergency Trauma Management Coordinator & she is undertaking her Masters of Traumatology.

She will be serving in the role of chair for the ATCN Revision committee for the 9th edition. Debra was the recipient of the 2020 STN Leadership award. Debra is also a member of the Trauma Association of SC and ENA.

Ms. Koestner has a 35-year nursing career, with experience spanning pediatric ICU, flight nursing, and the past 20 years in the role of trauma program manager. She is the current Trauma Program Director at Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids, MI. She has served as an appointed STN chair liaison to the Committee on Trauma. Amy participated in the Resource Manual for Optimal Trauma Care manual revisions. Is current faculty for ATCN and the Optimal course. She serves as a nurse reviewer for the ACS and multiple state systems for trauma verification.

Knut earned his MSN and MHA from the University of Oslo. He has worked at Oslo University Hospital for over 20 years, first as a Nurse Anesthetist then as Trauma Program Manager. Knut has served on the Board of Directors as the International Director at Large for 7 years.

In her current role she works with victims of gun violence in both the inpatient setting by preparing patients for transition of care at home and in the outpatient setting to assist patients in engaging in follow up care.

Kathleen is a trauma system consultant who develops trauma centers and systems globally, She served as senior director of trauma services at UCHealth, and was the trauma nurse director at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany (1at ACS-verified trauma center outside the US) and trauma program manager at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She served for 19 years on the STN Board of Directors, 2000-2001 STN president and a charter developer of TOPIC.

Jane has a long time interest in trauma registry—how the data is collected, what elements are included and how the persons abstracting that data are trained. Today Jane is here to speak about a multi-center research project examining trauma registry professionals and their intent to quit their current job.

Mary McNutt, BSN, RN, CCRN is a Critical Care Outreach and Resource (CCOR) Nurse for uchealth at Medical Center of the Rockies (MCR) in Loveland, CO where she lives with her husband and two beautiful girls. As a CCOR nurse, Mary responds to all in-house emergencies including Full-Traumas, MTPs, Stroke Alerts, RRTs, Code Blues etc. Mary has also worked in the SICU and SAC/PACU at MCR, as well as in the PICU at Cincinnati Childrens’ Hospital Medical Center.

Karen recieved her Bachelors of Nursing and Masters of Science in Trauma/Critical Care Nursing from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She has worked for the past 37 years as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Karen has lectured on neurological and trauma topics at numerous regional, national, and international conferences. She has also mentored other nurses as speakers and authors. Also well published on neurological and trauma topics, Karen has reviewed and edited many manuscripts and served as lead editor for the text “Trauma Nursing: From Resuscitation Through Rehabilitation” (3rd, 4th and 5th editions). She has served as an investigator on a number of studies exploring various aspects of trauma nursing care. Karen has worked in countries around the world including India and Brazil to foster improvements in trauma care. In addition, she is a Past President for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

Ashley Metcalf has almost 20 years of emergency and trauma nursing experience. She has been involved in several ACS consult and verification visits in her current role as PI Coordinator at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial in SC. She is an ATCN Director, Faculty, Regional Director and Chair of the ATCN QA Subcommittee. Ashley's research has been published in the Journal of Trauma Nursing. Additionally, she is an item writer for the TCRN practice exam through BCEN.

Dr. Nathens is the Chief of Surgery and Medical Director of Trauma at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada’s largest trauma center, and Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto, with cross appointments at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He is also practicing trauma surgeon and epidemiologist with a focus on trauma system design and trauma quality improvement. He has been working with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma since 2005, providing oversight of the National Trauma DataBank, which was the foundation of the the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program (ACS TQIP). He has been Director of ACS TQIP since its inception in 2010, with now over 800 hospitals across North America. He has held the role of Medical Director Trauma Quality Programs at the ACS since 2016. He holds an endowed chair in trauma research and has provided mentorship to over 30 graduate students. His research activity has been recognized through several awards and through over 400 publications in journals such as the NEJM, JAMA, and Lancet. He has been funded through the NIH, CDC and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research for most of his career.

During her time as a nurse, she has obtained multiple advanced certifications, presented at STN and ENA conferences, assisted in revising previous ATCN and TNCC courses, reviewed publications for The Journal of Trauma Nursing as well as participated in trauma committees on the local, state, and national levels.

Linda has been a trauma nurse for the last 38 years. Her experience lies in critical care, and emergency trauma nursing. Linda is a Clinical Nurse Specialist, and currently the Trauma Program Manager at Grand View Health, a Level II Trauma Center in Sellersville, PA. Linda is the current President of the Society of Trauma Nurses organization, and has served on the STN Board for the last 8 years, first as the Clinical Director-At-Large, then as Secretary until becoming President Elect. Linda is an active ATCN instructor and National Educator for the ATCN Faculty Course. Linda serves her community as an active firefighter for a very busy volunteer fire department in Quakertown, PA for the last 43 years.

Melody provides trauma, burn and critical care support for the EMS agencies and hospitals throughout the Midwest that bring patients to Hennepin Healthcare.

Diana acquired her BS-Nursing in 2004, specializing in Emergency & Trauma, her MBA-M in 2016, and her Doctorate in BA-Healthcare Management in 2023. She inaugurated the Trauma Program in Lebanon in 2010, where she started the ATLS Program as National Coordinator, and the ATCN and PHTLS Programs as National Director and Instructor.

Heather is the Director of Trauma and Forensics for a Level I Adult Trauma Center, Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, and a Forensic Program at Baylor Scott & White Health in Temple, TX. She has over 14 years of experience in trauma critical care and trauma system operations and development. She currently serves as faculty for TOPIC and is a member of several local, regional and national committees. She is actively involved in STN, ATS, TCAA, PTS, ACS and the ACHE volunteer committee.

Shakeva is currently the Director of Trauma at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital where she began her nursing career 19 years ago. She began as a Registered Nurse with the Medical-Surgical Unit, Clinical Nurse Coordinator for Trauma Services, and Trauma Program Manager for over 10 years. Shakeva holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) from Grand Canyon University and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus on Management and Organizational Leadership from American Sentinel University.

Dr. Beth Torres graduated from VCU with a BS in Nursing and a Masters and PhD in Adult Education and Human Resource Development. She has worked in critical care for over 30 and currently is a Trauma Nurse Clinician at VCU Medical Center. Dr. Torres is a certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and Trauma Care Registered Nurse (TCRN). She is a local and national conference speaker. She is an instructor for ACLS, Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum, and Rural Trauma Team Development Course.

Colleen Trevino PhD, NP is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin with 22 years of experience treating traumatically injured adults in a Level 1 trauma center in Milwaukee. Her research explores the relationship of biopsychosocial factors that modulate the pain experience and how acute pain transitions to the development of chronic pain. She has developed a clinic to address quality of life outcomes in adult gun violence survivors to address bio-psychosocial needs.

Currently serve as the Trauma Center Consultant for Golden Jubilee Medical Center as well as Nursing Faculty at Medical Sirira Hospital of Mahidol University. I am also the current Chairman of Thailand's Trauma Nurses Society and the Consultant to the Trauma Association of Thailand. I am the ATCN Country Director for Thailand, and I currently serve as on STN's International Council representing the Pacific and Asian interests.

Shane Urban is an accomplished researcher, author, and educator. He has nearly 20 years of experience working in emergency medicine and trauma research. His work has been presented at the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society of Trauma Nurses, the American Surgical Congress, the National Association of EMS Physicians, and theTQIP annual meetings. Furthermore, his work has been published in the Surgery, Journal of Trauma Nursing, and Prehospital Emergency Care.

LeAnne Young oversees Trauma & Injury Prevention at Texas Children's Hospital. She has over 18 years of trauma nursing experience with over 12 years in adult & pediatric trauma program operations. LeAnne has presented both nationally & internationally on pediatric trauma mortality, child physical abuse, and trauma performance improvement. She is an active member of STN, TCAA, PTS, EAST, ATS and the ACS.

Ben Zarzaur, MD, MPH

University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health

Dr. Zarzaur joined the faculty in the Department of Surgery at the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health in 2019. Currently, Dr. Zarzaur is funded by the National Institutes of Health to study the effectiveness of collaborative care interventions at improving long-term outcomes in older injured patients.

In addition to his research interests, Dr. Zarzaur has also served as a member and leader in many local, regional and national trauma organizations. He has served as the Chair of the Tennessee Committee on Trauma as well as the Chair of the Trauma Care Advisory Council. He was a member of the Indiana Department of Health Trauma Advisory Council. Currently, he is a member of the National Committee on Trauma. While in Memphis, Dr. Zarzaur was a medical team manager for an Urban Search and Rescue Team and has been deployed as part of disaster response.
