Upcoming Live Webinar Broadcasts

The Swiss Army Knife of Trauma Resuscitation: End Tidal CO2 and Waveform Capnography
Date: December 7, 2022 | 12:00 PM ET
Presented by Nicole Cook, MSN, APRN, AGCNS-BC, CEN, CCRN, TCRN

The most versatile tool in the trauma nurses toolbox is ETCO2 and waveform capnography. This "Swiss Army Knife" of trauma care can be utilized in all specialties that provide care along the entire trauma continuum, and provides the ability to assess for respiratory and metabolic derangements. This session will review the use of ETCO2 as a means to obtain accurate, real time information as to patient status and using the technology to guide resuscitation and patient care.

Nicole Cook has been a nurse for 19 years in specialties ranging from trauma critical care to emergency nursing. In her current role as a trauma clinical nurse specialist she is responsible for the clinical activities and outcomes for a busy level 1 trauma program, provides direct care of traumatically injured patients, and is consulted on the care of acutely injured spinal cord injuries and other specialty populations. She is a published author, with team articles in Journal of Emergency Nursing, Injury, American Journal of Emergency Medicine, and Journal of Trauma Nurses. Nicole is a TNCC director and ATCN faculty, and has presented at the state and national level on trauma and emergency department best practices. She can be found on Twitter at @TraumaSoapBoxes.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the utility of waveform capnography and end tidal CO2 in trauma assessment and resuscitation.
  • Relate waveform capnography readings to the underlying pathophysiology in hemorrhagic shock and trauma.
  • Utilize waveform capnography and end tidal CO2 values as part of a multifactorial assessment in order to quickly assess for and diagnose occult shock in trauma patients.
  • Discuss the application of monitoring waveform capnography and end tidal C02 in other trauma populations.
