STN Nurse Leadership Institute

The Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) Board of Directors and the Leadership Committee recently established a Nurse Leadership Institute to offer opportunities for aspiring leaders in trauma care to learn and grow in their profession. There is no cost to participate in the Leadership Institute, but STN leaders hope that as a result of participating, you will pay it back to the nursing profession (see Responsibilities/Key Activities).

The Leadership Institute is an on-line/web based program that has been designed to provide trauma leaders with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to provide exceptional service to their profession, their program, their customers, and the patients and families afflicted by traumatic injury. The program is designed to equip trauma leaders with the tools needed to effectively lead from the bedside to the boardroom and beyond. The multifaceted format is composed of web-based media utilizing experienced speakers, PowerPoint presentations, creative tool box items, and blogs. The course is designed in a 3-month timeframe (October-December) with different modules covering a variety of leadership topics that will assist the trauma leader to grow both personally and professionally in their leadership role.

The STN Leadership Institute uses the HLA Model to address core competencies for trauma leaders including:
  • Communication and Relationship Management
  • Leadership
  • Professionalism
  • Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment
  • Business Skills and Knowledge

The Leadership Institute directly supports and enhances the mission, vision and strategic plan of the STN organization by addressing the specialized needs of a trauma leader. The Leadership Institute is designed to equip trauma leaders with the tools needed to effectively lead from the bedside to the boardroom and beyond. Focusing on the elements of a successful trauma leader, the STN Leadership Institute Objectives encompass the utilization of various learning activities and web-based modules to provide attendees with knowledge and skills required to:
  • Build collaborative inter-professional relationships
  • Mentor up and coming trauma leaders
  • Devise succession plans for local trauma programs
  • Strengthen trauma system developmental plans
  • Implement strategies associated with successful trauma program management
  • Create an environment that provides an exceptional patient experience for those afflicted by traumatic injury
  • Foster leadership roles and activities within the STN organization and gain better understanding the opportunities available.

The STN Leadership Institute utilizes a group of trauma nurse leader experts to provide multifaceted skill building methods that center upon trauma program effectiveness. These methods may include:
  • Journal Club presentations
  • Tool Boxes
  • Blogs
The web based course occurs over a 12 week time period twice a year and involves seven modules covering key elements associated with trauma program leadership effectiveness. Participants attending the STN Annual Conference will have the option of additional face to face training time. Applicant must have a comfort level with an on-line format.

REQUIREMENTS For PC-based participants:

For Mac-based participants:
Latest version of Safari, Firefox, or Google Chrome (JavaScript enabled). Cable modem, DSL, or better Internet connection

Application Requirements:
  1. Complete the online form. Provide a CV and submit letter of support from a peer, mentor or administrator that outlines the applicants strengths, aspirations, leadership role in their current organization and why they would be an asset to this program.
  2. Interested candidates should apply on line via the STN website starting August 1, 2016. The call for nominations will close on September 1 and selected candidate(s) will be notified and announced by September 30.
Selection Criteria:
  1. The candidate must have an active membership with the Society of Trauma Nurses (STN).
  2. The applicant is an aspiring trauma nurse with a desire to grow professionally and become a leader in trauma. These aspirations may include advancing their education, participation on a committee, Special Interest Group (SIG), research, writing an article for the Journal of Trauma Nursing, or obtaining a leadership position within the trauma arena or STN organization.
  3. Candidates may include bedside nurses, flight nurses, nurses holding a management position in their trauma department or reside over an area that cares for trauma patients, ), nurse educators, Advanced Practice Nurses working in trauma, nurses who hold a state or health care system position, state and/or regional trauma nurse representatives
  4. The STN Leadership Committee will review applications and give a recommendation to STN Board of Directors.
  5. The STN Board of Directors will select the candidates based upon review of application, letter of recommendation and STN Leadership Committee recommendations.
Responsibilities/Key Activities:
  1. Attend webinars and complete required before/after session learning activities (reading articles, discussion boards, application activities, etc.).
  2. Commit to spending 8-12 hours reading materials, preparing for webinars, and complete required tasks.
  3. There is no fee to participate in the Leadership Institute. However, upon completion of the STN Leadership Institute, the attendee agrees to participate in a local, state, regional or national committee or Special Interest Group (SIG), or participate in a trauma research project, or submit an article to the Journal of Trauma Nursing or obtain a leadership position in a local, state, regional or national organization.
Continuing Education Credit: The Society of Trauma Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This program will provide 10.0 contact hours of continuing nursing education. All assignments and final evaluation must be completed by the course deadline to receive CNE for this program. No partial credit will be awarded.
